In today's fast-paced and hectic world, finding moments of tranquility and peace is essential for our well-being. One way to achieve this is by incorporating the ancient art of feng shui into our garden design. Feng shui focuses on creating harmony and balance between the natural and built environments. By applying feng shui principles to your garden, you can transform it into a serene oasis that nurtures positive energy and promotes a sense of calm. In this article, we will explore the key elements and principles of feng shui garden design.
The flow of energy
Feng shui emphasizes the flow of energy, known as "Chi," throughout a space. In a garden, the aim is to create a harmonious flow of Chi that allows it to circulate freely and nourish all areas. To achieve this, I consider the following:
- Pathways and curves: Design your garden with gentle, curved pathways that encourage a meandering flow. Avoid straight lines, as they can disrupt the energy. Curved paths also create a sense of intrigue and discovery.
- Water features: In my garden design consultations, I often use water elements to activate wealth, career and opportunities for clients. Water elements, such as ponds, water fountains, pools are set in a particular point of property that is specific to each property.
Water symbolizes abundance and wealth in feng shui and helps to attract positive energy. We always need to ensure that the water is clean, flowing, and well-maintained.
-Plant placement: I carefully select and position plants to create a balance of yin and yang energies. Mix tall, upright plants (yang) with soft, flowing ones (yin) to create a harmonious contrast. It is recommended to avoid overgrown or dying plants, as they can block the flow of energy.
2. The Five Energies in Action
The feng shui philosophy is based on the belief that the world is composed of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element is associated with specific colors, and incorporating these colors into your garden can enhance the energy flow:
- Wood: Represented by green, this element symbolizes growth and vitality. Applying plant lush trees, shrubs, and flowering plants to bring the wood element into a garden.
- Fire: The fire element represents passion, transformation, and energy. Using red, orange, or purple flowers to introduce the fire element. Consider adding outdoor lighting or a fire pit to create warmth and illumination, when fire element is needed to balance a property or garden.
- Earth: Earth represents stability, nourishment, and grounding. When I asses that earth element is needed to bring more balance, I'd suggest to incorporate earthy tones such as browns, yellows, and sandy hues into your garden through stones, pebbles, or pottery.
- Metal: Metal signifies clarity, precision, and strength. Introducing metal elements through sculptures, wind chimes, or decorative metal objects in white, gray, or metallic colors to clients and properties that need more quality of metal energy.
- Water: Water represents fluidity, abundance, and relaxation. Blue and black are associated with the water element. This is the strongest element of all and I take much care with placing water, as it is a fine, detailed art on it's own. Including assessment of the property, clients birth details and feng shui from analysis all determine the exact location and direction where the water may be placed at the proeprty, to bring positive results.
3.Balance and Symmetry:
Balance and symmetry play a vital role in feng shui garden design. I always aim to create a sense of equilibrium by considering the following:
- Yin and Yang: incorporating a balance of soft, flowing features (yin) with more structured and solid elements (yang). For example, pair curved pathways with geometrically shaped flower beds or place a cozy seating area next to a vibrant flower garden.
- Focal Points: Creating a focal point in your garden is a great tool to draw attention and balance the energy. This could be a beautiful sculpture, a strategically placed tree, or a carefully designed seating area.
- Natural Structures: I often utilise existing natural features like trees, hedges, or fences to create a sense of enclosure and privacy. Well-defined boundaries give a garden structure and enhance its balance. They can also create balance for entire property when some parts are missing from the layout.
Each and every property is unique and a feng shui garden consultation is never alike. I offer practical solutions to my clients, that make sense to them and are friendly to their budget. It is important to always consider the clients needs as a first priority. After all, we want to create a garden that client will love and enjoy!
